ACCUZYME® (papain-urea debriding ointment) - How It Works

1 Necrotic tissue contains proteins folded by cross-linking bonds.
The urea molecules in ACCUZYME disrupt these cross-linking bonds, causing the proteins to unfold.
As the proteins unfold, they become more susceptible to enzymatic attack by the papain in ACCUZYME.
The enzymatically digested proteins from the necrotic tissue are broken into small peptide fragments which are easily washed away from the wound.

Papain, from the fruit of carica papaya, effectively digests nonviable protein matter without harming viable tissue. In ACCUZYME, papain is combined with urea to enhance its digestive potency, making it suitable for debridement of necrotic tissue and liquefication of pus in acute and chronic lesions such as:

  • pressure ulcers
  • varicose ulcers
  • burns
  • infected wounds
  • postoperative wounds
  • carbuncles
  • traumatic wounds
  • pilonidal cyst wounds
  • diabetic ulcers
